I’m gonna be doing something a little bit different this week! Normally, I use paid posts to share even more takes on gender, technology, and culture. However, I’m also a college instructor, so I often use this platform to talk about teaching. I start most semesters with a post outlining my intentions for the upcoming semester: What does my syllabus look like? How do I support my students? How do I plan to teach as an expression of love, as bell hooks would have wanted?
This semester, I’ve decided to introduce myself to my students with a video about generative AI, a still-prescient topic in education spaces. Is ChatGPT really just a cheating device, or can it be used as an instructional tool? I feel as though this video—which I plan to post to YouTube for all to see by the end of August—will give students a great sense of who I am as an instructor. It’s based heavily on my past writings on AI, covering everything from ungrading to racial bias to prison abolition. If you’re new to the newsletter and are dying for something to read, check out those posts!
Paying members will get exclusive early access to my video script below. They’re also more than welcome to give feedback, as I don’t start filming until later this week! Fair warning, it’s a 14-page script; I have lots to say!!
