In October 2021, Facebook revealed that it would be changing its name to Meta, a branding move to reflect its new corporate direction as pioneers of the supposed next digital frontier: The Metaverse. Mark Zuckerberg, the man who started his tech career building a website for men to rank female Harvard students by hotness who then went on to compromise global democracy by selling user data to private firms to help them steal an election for Republicans is now trying to sell the American public on the idea of The Metaverse™.
What is The Metaverse™? If you ask Big Tech, it’s an exciting new digital realm where you can go to work, go shopping, go shopping, and even go to work!
I have a different idea for the Internet, however, and I’m not alone. I believe in the power of the one of the greatest communication tools our species has ever had, and thus I believe in the metaverse; just not the Metaverse™.
Allow me to contrast the metaverse with The Metaverse™, using a little bit of Internet history and a lot of anti-capitalist thought ;)
